This was the first tick-borne focused conference in Florida and was cohosted with J. Lawton Smith of the University of Miami School of Medicine. Dr. Smith was the world’s expert in congenital spirochetal diseases, as he was on the Tuskegee Experiment’s pediatric team and was an overall consultant to NIH on the Tuskegee Experiment. He compared Congenital Lyme disease to Congenital Syphilis. Drs. Tom Schwan, James Miller, and Warren Simpson presented about the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi. Drs. Paul Duray and Louis Magnarelli discussed Pathology, Pathogenesis, and Testing. Drs. Pietrucha, Ed Masters and another doctor discussed pediatric Lyme disease. Drs. Paul Lavoie, Gerold Stanek (Austria), Andrew Packner, Philip Williams (Ontario, Canada), and Joe Burrascano, Jr. presented on treating adults. Gestational and pediatric Lyme was addressed by Drs. Paul Lavoie, Dorothy Pietrucha, and George Wendell. The LDF held its traditional Public Forum, in order to educate the public. All presenters voluntarily stayed to present information to the public and answer their questions.
